Governor proposes health coverage for adult children

New York would join a growing list of states permitting young adults as old as 29 to remain on their parents' health insurance policies under a plan Gov. David A. Paterson will propose today during his first State of the State address in the Capitol.

The proposal would reduce the number of uninsured New Yorkers by as many as 80,000 without costing the deficit-ridden state a dime. (Updated: 07:14 AM)

U. S. Judge John T. Elfvin, 91, dies

John T. Elfvin, a retired federal court judge who was long known as a rebel in the court system, died Tuesday afternoon in a Lancaster nursing home. He was 91.

Judge Elfvin, whose 33-year judicial career was rocked by several controversies, carried a heavy caseload until age 90. He retired in 2007 after a series of medical problems. (Updated: 07:14 AM)

Israel halts campaign for 3 hours to let in aid

Israel ordered a pause in its Gaza offensive for three hours Wednesday to allow food and fuel to reach besieged Palestinians, and the country's leaders debated whether to accept an international cease-fire plan or expand the assault against Hamas. (Updated: 07:38 AM)
